Value of Old Postage Stamps

Any beginning stamp collector wants to know about the value of old postage stamps. This value is dependent upon many factors, not just its age. Although there is a long list of  factors, some of the more important ones include centering, condition, and rarity.

The value of old postage stamps often relies upon centering, and it's the first thing that collectors should notice. Centering is basically how the stamp's image exists within the stamp's margins. Those concerned about stamps appraisal categorize centering as poor, average, fine, very fine, superb, and jumbo. The trick to truly discovering a stamp's centering is by turning the stamp upside down; this way, your eyes can truly see its position without being distracted by reading any words.

The condition, also known as the grade, is often considered the most important factor when determining a stamp's value. Stamps that are well preserved are more valuable. Collectors should also pay attention to the glue on the back of the stamp, known as the gum. Stamps that are considered to be in "mint" condition have gum that is fully intact. Creases or skips in the gum will decrease the stamp's value. Additionally, postage stamps that have been used will no longer have this gum.

Rarity is another important factor when determining the value of old postage stamps. Simply stated, if there is a large number of a certain type of stamp available, the value of that stamp will decrease. In some cases, collectors will choose stamps that may not score as high in the centering or condition category simply because of their rarity.

The value of old postage stamps are also determined by many more factors. The internet is a great place to research the value of any stamps you may have in your collection. Stamp dealers in your neighborhood are also a wealth of useful information.
