Postcard Collecting

Postcard collecting has always been a popular hobby for Americans. This is true even during the early days of postcard production when they first appeared at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Originally, postcards only allowed for the name and address of the recipient to be on the back of the card; the messages were written on the front, covering the picture. In 1907, postcards began appearing with divided backs, allowing a message to be included opposite the address. This innovation kept the image of the postcard intact, and it's these images that interest postcard collectors.

When it comes to postcard collecting, the age of the postcards usually fall into one of two categories. Typically, postcards printed before 1925 are considered antique. Postcards printed between 1925 and 1980 are considered vintage. Of course, for the avid collector, there are many other categories in between. The value of these postcards vary greatly depending on their age, condition, image, and material.

Prior to beginning a postcard collection, it's a good idea to become educated regarding the collection process. There are many resources available for postcard collecting ranging from books to online communities. Online forums are a great place to learn more about the hobby as a whole, as well as discover your personal collection niche. Many collectors find their treasures at antique stores or online, buying and selling their antique and vintage postcards on eBay.

From vintage French postcards to vintage Christmas postcards, collectors will find something that truly sparks their interest. Although postcard collecting can focus upon monetary value, the true joy is having a collection that is personally meaningful.
