Rainbows are a popular theme on both stamps and postcards. Photographs and illustrations of scenes with colorful rainbows in the background may be found on stamps from many countries. The theme is always unity and peace. The U.S. 1998 first day issue stamp “Giving and Caring” displays the hands of a father and child with a rainbow in the background. A French stamp commemorating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the United Nations in 1976 illustrates the world in black and white encircled by a rainbow colored ribbon. In 1992 the Virgin Islands issued a stamp representing Christopher Columbus coming ashore, with a rainbow over the island.
Postcards picturing rainbows range from actual photographs of scenery with real rainbows in all their glory; over the islands of Hawaii to the plains of the Mid-west. There are also postcards with almost any design using rainbow colored ribbons through the design. One has a design of circles intersecting circles of rainbows, small and large on the front side. Another has a photograph of a rainbow over trees. The city of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, is pictured on a postcard with a double rainbow in the background.
Both postcards and stamps with rainbows are available online at various sites and may be purchased at reasonable prices. Many of these sites even allow you to provide your own design into which they will insert the colors of the rainbow. Then you can share them, and their beauty and promise, with your friends.
