Brazil has found a very unique way to advertise their coffee. In December of 2001, the country issued 3.6 million stamps that smelled like coffee. The stamp shows a spoon with coffee beans and was infused with coffee. The value of the stamp was 1.30 reals. This was the second time that Brazil issued a stamp that gave off an odor. They printed a stamp to draw attention to the burning of the rain forest. The 1999 stamp smelled like burned wood.
Not all of Brazil's stamps are as innovative as their coffee stamp, but they are excellent stamps and well worth collecting. Like many countries, they cherish their wildlife. Brazil has issued a set of 4 stamps dedicated to nature, and a second set of 2 issued in 2008 that show off an owl and woodpecker. They have even issued stamps of shells and sharks. One such stamp is the 1984 set issued for the World Wildlife Federation that portraits several different monkeys.
Brazil is proud of the various countries that they have established diplomatic relationships with, and have celebrated these relations with postage stamps. They have issued stamps recording relationships with Canada, Lebanon, Russia and France.
The country is equally proud of its history. It has issued 2 sets of 10 stamps that recognize their national heroes. They have stamps that pay homage to their marines, mounted cavalry and civilian police. They have issued stamps celebrating anniversaries, such as the 200th birthday of Sao Palo.
The stamps that have been issued by Brazil are as diverse as the country itself. They should have a spot in any stamp collection.
